Soccer moms usually sit on the sidelines at their kids soccer games and talk about things that are bothering them in their community; rarely do they get up and do something about it. When soccer moms do get together outside of the soccer fields, it’s to exercise, have a candle party or go out to eat without the children for a ‘girl’s night out.’
Soccer moms can become involved in their community several different ways; one is by volunteering as a group. There are many different ways to become involved in your community and volunteering at the local women’s shelter is a great place to start. There are women who are not as fortunate as the soccer moms who have nice mini vans and husbands who support them or good paying jobs and friends. These women are usually single mothers with no where to turn to and it would make their day to have someone like a soccer mom who can relate to the everyday struggles of organizing and raising a family under stress and pressure to talk with.
Besides talking with the women at the women’s shelter, there is always laundry to be done, skills that you might have that you can teach the women such as interviewing and how to write a resume, how to bake or cook, thing that you know they may need in the future when they get their life back on track and have a home once again.
Volunteering at a soup kitchen with the rest of the soccer moms is a great way to show your kids that it’s important to become involved in the community and give something back as someone who has everything they need. Either take the soccer team with you and the other soccer moms or allow them to see or know what you are doing because it is important for children to be charitable now and as they grow up.
Another way for the entire soccer team to get involved in the community is for them to ‘adopt’ a section of street or highway and then once a month, organize a cleaning day in which everyone comes out and cleans that stretch of land along the street. People throw things out their car windows all the time and the trash is bad for the environment as well as the wildlife that sometimes stops along the way to eat the garbage. This type of volunteering would be well suited for the older groups of soccer teams along with the soccer moms.
Soccer moms can get together once a week or month, whichever their schedules allow for, and either quilt or knit for babies or the homeless. Creating a blanket for someone who desperately needs one is a very good feeling and soccer moms that get together for this type of volunteering often feel a sense of pride when they have given of themselves by making blankets for the needy.
Hospitals, such as the Veterans Hospitals, always need volunteers to help with patients like handing out magazines and water when they need them. Soccer moms can go in groups to the different local hospitals as volunteers to help out not only in a crises but any time.
